Whilst the Scrooge’s amongst you will scream “it’s only November!”, the Christmas celebrations kick off early in Edinburgh. Here are the events you can’t miss this festive season:
The Christmas Market
The Christmas market opens its gates on the 17th November and can be found in East Princes Street Gardens. I guarantee that nothing else will get you in the festive spirit quite as well – the market is full of food stalls, funfair rides and places to pick up those last-minute Christmas gifts. Edinburgh residents with an EH postcode can even get 20% off all rides and attractions; just make sure you’ve brought a proof of address along when buying or collecting tickets.
Light night
Edinburgh’s official light switch-on is happening on the 18th November from 3pm onwards. George Street will be lit up with fireworks, accompanied by choirs and other festive entertainment. This was a really lovely afternoon last year, so be sure to go along.
Ice Skating in St Andrew Square
The Ice Skating rink in St Andrew Square loops around the Melville monument, allowing you to skate around in style. Tickets aren’t too pricey (again, remember to use the EH discount!) and there are skates for hire. Just be make sure to buy your tickets a few days early to avoid disappointment.

Christmas at the Botanics
The Royal Botanic Gardens get dressed up in a vast array of lights, including projections on the impressive glasshouses. This is another event to get tickets early for, as the event is very popular. Make sure to dress up warm too!
