Taking advantage of Semester 2

Well, there we have it. It is official! Your first semester ever at Edinburgh (or just first semester of this year) has come to an end!

You have been busy for the last three weeks relaxing, maybe catching up on some reading that is NOT school related, spending time with family and friends over the holidays, traveling, or just taking a breather from the world. And… then you suddenly realize that there is only one week left before the second semester begins.

Your winter break has passed in the blink of an eye! You might find yourself looking back and asking “What can I do different? How can I make sure that I make the most out of this semester?” Well, as I find myself asking these very questions, let me share some ideas for how to make this semester unforgettable, and most importantly, one that you will be able to look on and say: “I did everything I could have!”

5 ideas:

1. Make time for fun activities

Take up an activity that you’ve been wanting to do but have been making excuses to not do. For example, if you have a hobby that you used to do at home or that you gave up since you started school, just go do it! If you used to run races, start running and sign up for local races. If you used to play a sport in high school, look into the school’s club teams!

2. Explore Scotland!

I am ashamed of myself that I only left Edinburgh once in the fall semester. Get a travel book from Costwold Outdoor or Amazon, or just surf the internet for tours or places that are “must see spots” and go see them!

3. Stay balanced

Balance studies and fun. Of course school is important, but remember so is your mental health. Spend time with friends, go to the movies, play video games, go to museums, go hiking, do whatever you desire! Just make sure you’re taking care of your brain. Your brain needs a break from schoolwork in order for it to do well in school! This might sound absurd, but it is true!

4. Step out of your comfort zone!

Try to expand your circles. We live in a gorgeous city.. try to meet people who are not students. Spending time with locals opens you up to new experiences and provides you with a way of seeing Edinburgh from a different perspective!

5. Attend local events

Browse the internet for interesting events that are happening in Edinburgh or the surrounding areas! There is a lot happening! Everything from concerts, to arts and crafts festivals, to food carnivals… it is all there waiting for you to find it!
